There is nothing that makes me feel lost, like the aloofness that comes with being done with school. That in-between period where you have to decide if you need to get a new job, change career path, continue in the academic line, get married, or be a nuisance. For me, there has only been one recourse to escape this unknowingness, and that is to further my education. Education has been an escape route, providing me with the security of usefulness; of providing me with schedules, who I am answerable to, deadlines, and healthy competition.
However, as the end of my academic journey draws to an end, I am asking myself questions of what next, and I am sure you are too. Sincerely, very few of us have answers to this outside what our mentors have advised us to do or what our peers are doing; we are almost vision-less. But listening to Berkeley’s college Valedictorian speaker Tyler Chen, this past weekend, I was able to deduce a fair shot at a clear path. According to him, the academic environment creates unfair pressures and sometimes unhealthy competition, with high achieving standards placed on our shoulders by parents and peers. But that burden is lifted off once you’re out of the academic environment, where you can create your own path, set personal standards, and run free.
At this point your goals become personal, grades barely matter, and the world wants to know how capable you are in solving prevailing world challenges at all levels (health, academic, sciences, justice, economic, social and art). As I mentioned today on my other social media (Twitter & Instagram) pages, “may we exude an intelligence that is inspired by justice, guided by tenderness, moved by holiness and all reason formed by love.
Did you have your commencement this month, what are your after school plans?
