A few years ago, I came across a stash of vintage images of my mother. She was young with remarkable style. Her style still gives off an elite aura. So to celebrate Mothers Day here in the US, I will be sharing some of her style inspired Thümm & Co. Drawing inspiration from her personal style, or more importantly, recalling great advice bequeathed by her and other women who have seen trends come and go and who have carved out a style all their own.
CELEBRATING MOTHERS DAY WITH THESE 5 STYLE ADVICE FROM MY MOTHER
Fun fact, looking at vintage mom photos never gets old. Looking at my mother’s style, It only makes sense that I turned out the way I did, with my love for fashion. Although I have developed a personal style, I still refer to her refined style choices for inspiration, and her advice a useful guide.
FIVE STYLE ADVICE FROM MY MOTHER
Choose a Red Nail Polish When in Doubt: Because I grew up seeing my mom rock a red nail polish, it is always my default choice for a classy look.
Always show up Dressed Properly: My mum is a firm believer in the mantra, never be caught un-fresh. When I was younger, she would police my outfit choice for an event and made sure I showed up my best. Either at home or taking a casual stroll, my mom never lets her style guard down.
You Never Go Wrong in Heels: I began my love for heeled shoes at a young age, thanks to my mom. I would watch her style inched heels in her favorite open-toe design because her red-polished nails would peek through.
A Good Accessory Makes All the Difference: For my mother, accessories where necessary to elevate a look, and my mum loves her gold accessories. I agree with her! Although I am not huge on styling with accessories, I know when to rock them to make a bold statement.
Always Have New & Important Clothes Saved up For Special Events: As an Igbo woman, my mum, who came of age in the city, did not stray far away from her culture. She needed to have clothes made or sparred for special occasions. This habit saved her money and time. As I aged, I adopted a similar principle, and it has saved me from appearing shabby.
PEARLS OF WISDOM FROM JOAN RIVERS
When Thummco reached out for this Mothers Day collaboration, a female icon I thought to highlight is late Joan Rivers. Her comedic timing and style critique were defining moments for fashion content on television and for me. I always made sure to tune in on E!
Here are some of my favourite quotes of hers
“Don’t dress inappropriately for your age. There’s nothing worse than seeing someone from behind and thinking they look cute until they turn around. It’s hard to look at yourself and say ‘that’s too young for me’…that’s why you have a daughter to do it for you.” Culled from Glamour
“People say that money is not the key to happiness, but I always figured if you have enough money, you can have a key made.”
“Life is very tough. If you don’t laugh, it’s tough.” —Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, 2010
MOTHERS DAY STYLE ADVICE FROM OTHERS
I came across some great style advice offered up from the team’s moms’ at Thumm & Co.
What’s the best piece of style advice your mom ever gave you?
Invest, invest, invest — Having style is wearing what makes you feel most confident. Trends come and go, but confidence is timeless.
What does your mom’s fashion taste say about her or reveal about her personal style?
She likes to keep things simple and refined, whether it was her personal style or libation. While she is not against newness or over-the-top items, her favourite things are always aged to perfection.
If money were no object, what would you buy your mom for Mother’s Day?
If it’s not related to fashion, a spa day — complete with all the perks. If it has to be a fashion item, I would get her a time-honoured favourite; like a timepiece from Thümm & Co, a premium crafted women’s and men’s watches brand. Her mantra has always been: ‘you’re never fully dressed without accessories.
So, I’ll love to hear from my readers, do you have a bit of style advice from your mother to share? Also, don’t forget to follow me on my social media platforms and share my blog with your network(s).
