MOVING FOR GRAD SCHOOL, A MILENIAL’S TALE

MOVING FOR GRAD SCHOOL, A MILENIAL’S TALE

It was sometime in 2015, when I had decided to actively pursue my long dream of attending grad school degree outside the shores of Nigeria. A dream often left for the elite class of the country (at least one pastor in my church voiced that) a group I was not part of.

There were a lot of questions as to why I am choosing to pursue a degree outside the shores of Nigeria, when the Naira is falling against the dollar ($1 is now N256), and I was starting to build a brand for myself. I am doing well in Nigeria, I have my blog going well for me, a full-time job, and run a business by the side. But “Sometimes our comfort zone is not enough to propel us to greatness and we barely learn new things from being there”.
I decided to apply to just one university, at the time, it was an uncommon decision for a lot of people who want to have options in such a huge decision. But I had only one in mind that offered the courses which spoke to my interest and that was Georgetown. I get icky like that when my mind is set on something to accomplish (I just want what I want) and  GEORGETOWN was it. It was the only institution that I felt compelled to apply to, with an interdisciplinary focus that accommodated individuals like me with multifaceted interest. I even set up a go fund me HERE.

Little did I know that it was going to be a test of my faith, a testimony that only God was to share the glory. I’ll do a proper sequel on “what you need to know, about getting into grad school” for an international student, although the process is cumbersome the end is worth it. Fast forward two years down the line, I’m in Washington DC.
A favorite bible quote, I have referenced throughout this experience is  Romans 8:32 MSG
If God didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition
and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there
anything else he wouldn’t gladly and freely do for us?
One of my major setbacks in my journey was finance, and looking back at my experience, I wish I had gotten a scholarship. I ran a campaign to raise funds, and it was a very low and vulnerable point at my life, opening me up to a lot of criticism. People felt they could speak on my life and finances because I curated content on the gram but it was all worth it in the end.
After my GRE, a writing sample, series of medical and laboratory test, a lot of nay sayers, financial difficulties that almost made me decide the vision wasn’t worth it, I leave today to start a new journey, filled with hope and love. An overall lesson I derived, was that if I could push myself to this length for an earthly goal, I can do so to stand in a right place with God and pursue righteousness.

OUTFIT DETAILS
My outfit are two ruffle elastic tops worn together to give it an illusion of a layered dress. One of the few ways I love to express my creatively is finding new ways to style obvious clothing pieces. But I am also curious what lessons have you learned from pursuing a dream or goal you set for yourself?
