At Alexandria, Thompson’s Italian Restaurant is Redefining Italian Cuisine

Discover why Thompson’s Italian in Alexandria, VA, is redefining Italian cuisine with its inventive seasonal menu, Mediterranean-inspired dishes, and welcoming neighborhood atmosphere.

The Invitation

On a fine summer weekend in 2025, my phone lit up with a message I couldn’t ignore:
“Grace, I just had the best squid ink pasta from this Italian restaurant… omg you would love the spice.”
FOMO is my middle name, so naturally, I had to check out this place for myself. The location was in Alexandria and I could inconvenience myself for the promise of spectacular food. I got ready and, with just a hint of dramatic flair, sprinted out the door to see what the fuss was about.

First Impressions

The first thing I noticed when I arrived was the striking blue facade of Thompson’s Italian, nestled like a hidden gem among the brick businesses lining Old Town’s busy corridor. Even from the outside, the place had an inviting energy—vivid, a little quirky, and full of character. I was greeted with genuine warmth at the door. Inside, the well-lit bar glowed softly, already buzzing with early evening regulars. Somehow, luck was on my side: there was one outdoor table left, and I gratefully claimed my seat.

First Bites

Menus can be overwhelming, but this one pulled me in right away. I zeroed in on the meatballs appetizer and, of course, the much-hyped squid-ink pasta with scallops that my friend had raved about. Both dishes arrived quickly. The meatballs came served on a lush herb yogurt base with just enough spice to wake up my palate.

The pasta, inky and dramatic, was as beautiful as it was delicious—just the right amount of heat, perfectly cooked scallops, and a portion that struck that rare balance: completely satisfying, but leaving me already looking forward to the next bite.

The Joy and Frustration of Change

That’s the double-edged sword of a restaurant that leans into seasonality and creativity: the thrill of something new, the heartbreak when a favorite vanishes. I’ve learned to embrace the excitement, even as I quietly hope my top picks will make a comeback.

Each new menu brings a fresh wave of anticipation—and, sometimes, frustration, when I have to say goodbye to a beloved dish.

A Growing Obsession

Something about Thompson’s Italian lingered with me after that first visit. Maybe it was the food, maybe the unique ambiance, or maybe the way the staff made me feel like I was already a regular. Whatever it was, it worked—I found myself back at their tables again and again, sometimes three times a week, much to the concern of my wallet. But every bite, every visit, just deepened my craving for more.

Seasonal Surprises

The dish that truly won me over? Their meatballs. I’d never tasted anything quite like them: a subtle, unexpected spice paired with that creamy herb spread. It was a new flavor pairing which I didn’t mind. As the months rolled on, I realized Thompson’s Italian wasn’t just another Italian joint serving up the usual suspects.

Their menu dances with the seasons, blending Mediterranean inspirations into classic Italian foundations. In the fall, they brought out a chicken dish, braised with apples and vegetables in a thick, fragrant broth, that honestly ruined me for all other chicken. I’d like to say I practiced restraint, but truthfully, I spent most of my autumn budget coming back for more, only to mourn the dish when it disappeared with the changing menu.

More Than a Meal

Yet through every menu change, one thing remains: I keep coming back. Thompson’s has woven itself into my routines and memories. When they opened a new dining floor, I was invited to try it out, and there I met Katie, one of the co-owners and a pastry chef whose accolades are well-earned. Her desserts have a delicacy and balance that always surprise me—sweet, but never cloying, and presented with a kind of elegant simplicity that makes each bite feel special.

A Sense of Belonging

But the real magic of Thompson’s Italian isn’t just on the plate. It’s in the people. The staff, from servers to bartenders, haven’t changed since my first visit. They know my name, remember my favorite orders, and always start me off with that perfect combination: bread and honey. Sometimes, there’s a little extra treat on the house—a new dessert to taste, or a suggestion for the next dish I might fall in love with. It’s the kind of familiarity that makes a place feel like home.

The Hallmarks of a Favorite

For me, the ultimate sign of a great restaurant isn’t just free bread—though Thompson’s delivers on that front, with options like honey, butter, or pesto. It’s the feeling of being part of something. The staff’s camaraderie, their kindness, the way they make everyone feel welcome—it all combines to create an atmosphere that’s as nourishing as the food.

Alexandria’s Go-To

I know I’m not alone in this. Any evening between 4:30 and 10:00pm, the place is alive with people who, like me, have made Thompson Italian their go-to for great food and good company. Whether you’re there for a special occasion or just because it’s Tuesday, you’ll find the seats filled with regulars and newcomers alike, all drawn in by the promise of something delicious and the comfort of community.

Thompson’s Italian isn’t just redefining what Italian cuisine can be in Alexandria—it’s redefining what it means to truly love a restaurant. If you’re after food that surprises, service that remembers, and an experience that feels like coming home, look no further. I’ll probably see you there.
