EMBRACING MY 4’C KINKY HAIR

I have been on my natural hair journey for a decade. A journey which didn’t start off on self-love, but due to the damning consequences of hair relaxers on my health. I would relax my hair and suddenly feel like I had a log attached to my head, and decided against the use of chemical products; restricting it to shampoo, or conditioner.
Fast-Forward to the last 4-years, a new wave of natural hair movement has created a booming industry, people transitioning their relaxed hair out, and going natural. But like all good things, the oversaturation on social media platforms with natural hair videos romanticised some the struggles faced by those with 4C hair texture -it’s shrubby texture, the tough curls, how it soaked up hair products like a dry well, etc.
My natural hair does not fall with grace, I wake up sometimes and it has a mind of its own- shrinking at one end while exalting itself at another; these days, I’ve learned to embrace how my face looks with it. For a long time, I struggled with feeling beautiful while wearing out my natural hair. The length made me worry, because of all the time I invested in making it grow, while the shrubbiness didn’t help my angst.
Recently, I’ve found myself feeling zen, sticking to routines and mantras I declared for myself this year, which has led me to embrace my non-conforming natural hair, regardless of how it’s decided to grow.
While writing this blog post, I came across a relateable youtube video, which I thought to share- I know I’m not alone in the struggle.
